The Arts Alive banner unveiling was a great success. About 100 artists participated in the event and I think this was definitely the best year so far.
Below is a picture of my banner...a larger version of my China Doll girl.
My personal favorite was the "Blue Heron" painted by Ciara Ortiz.
Sorry these pictures are kind of grainy. The lighting inside was horrible! Especially since all the windows were covered in banners. Not much natural light coming in.

It's time again for this years Arts Alive banner unveiling. I can't wait to see all the new paintings this year!
I decided to paint a larger version of my "China Doll" lady which I'm hoping the color will really pop from the street post.
They asked the artists not to post their paintings till after the event, so I'll show you all later.
About 200-300 people are expected to walk through it! yikes!
If you want to miss the crowds and get great parking, show up after 3:30pm. Otherwise...I'll see you there. Karin

before and After--buffet table

I've been trying to sell this buffet with no luck for over a year. Finally, I gave in and took it home. Decided to paint it a warm gray giving it my custom "ship wreak" finish. Once it entered the Pannikin it was snatched up fast. So fast that they had a list a customers wanting to buy it if the original buyer changed his mind.
Why didn't I paint it sooner!?

I end this post with Bobby staring intently at this felted bird. If I don't get it away in time, he would gladly dismantle the whole thing. (Not sure if I posted this picture before? If so, sorry. It just cracks me up every time I see it.)

This month artist Kevin Farrell is showing his vintage inspired garage art on canvas and wood.....and downstairs we have painter Molly Nicholson's blues club inspired paintings.

Merry Christmas!

A quick mid-day post in between Christmas festivities. It's been a busy couple of weeks around here and I just don't have the energy to write a full story about each event so here goes......

-one of the many little trees in my house.
-made some stockings from fabric and coffee bags
-painted a nursery for my sister (expecting soon so stay tuned for another shower post)
-made lots of soup
-went paddle boarding with friends on Christmas Eve. (a perfectly sunny day)
-(not pictured) I finished my banner for this years Arts Alive street banner project. (More on that soon too)

.....and now I'm off to my other sister's house for more cheer and fun with adorable nephews.

Deck the halls!

My house has turned into a Christmas candyland. Should I put the big tree up this year? It feels festive enough.. no?

This years Artist Market was a huge success. Actually, I've never been disappointed with any of the past ones, but this year was beyond amazing. A literal sea of people swarmed my show and it was great catching up with all the locals and friends.
I have yet to rest from it. There's just too much to do. Shipping orders, stocking Barrels and Branches and hanging more art at the Pannikin. Oh, and I almost forgot, this years street banner is due Jan. 3rd!!! sh#t, I'm not even close to finishing. This weekend will be my time to paint all night while listening to christmas music...and drinking plenty of wine to keep my spirits high. Pictures to come soon. I can't believe the Artists Market/Open Studio is next Sunday! Everything seems to be coming together so I'm not feeling too stressed. Maybe it will catch up with me the days before, but for now I'm on cruise control.
My studio is packed and I still have more to squeeze in there! There will be something for everyone this year and cross your fingers...I think the weather will be perfect.

Thanksgiving

This year my friend Shannon and I brought our families together to celebrate Thanksgiving. (about 15 for dinner, and another 7 came for the after party)
Since she was housesitting on the bluff, the owners (which are also good friends) offered their house up for the festivities. Here is a view from their deck. Isn't it dreamy?
Shannon....I know you don't read my blog so you'll never see this photo I posted of you. Whaaaahaahaa! (It was super bright out and we didn't have hats, so we stuck food baskets on our heads.

I managed to get only two pictures of the appetizers and the trifle I made for dessert. In case you're wondering... it's layered with brownies, vanilla pudding, fresh berries, and whipped cream. So goooood.

Check back tomorrow for some pre-artist market pictures. It's been a long week but I feel like I'm ahead of schedule (I think?).

Artists Market and Open Studio

I've received some emails asking if I'm going to have my sale this year. So glad that others are excited about it as much as I am, but also so stressful. The pressure is on to make this as special as the previous ones...and actually, I think it's going to be the best one yet.
The next few weeks will be spent decorating and pulling out all the vintage goodness I've collected this past year. I also have many new paintings to share as well as some new felted pin cushions and plantings in vintage vessels.
My fellow friends and artists joining this year will have tables chocked full of their own creations. There will be candles, art, hand sewn lovelies, pottery, and more vintage. (you can never have enough vintage!)

I promise to keep you posted with sneak peeks as time grows near, but until then.....mark your calendars!

Before and After--Ugly Card Table

My friend was clearing out his moms art studio and gave me this old vintage card table. I liked it because of the metal ribbing around the side.....reminds me of a galvanized trash can. The top was pretty badly stained so I recovered it with fabric and a thick clear plastic over that to protect it even more. Oh yeah, I painted the metal a dark gray too.
I know I won't be embarrassed to lug this table around to my next show.

Harvest Flea Market is tomorrow!

So sorry I forgot to post about this, but it's not too late. The Encinitas Pannikin is throwing their 1st Annual Harvest Flea Market tomorrow from 10 -2pm. They asked me to sell vintage and my car is FULL. I even filled Art's truck with some new furniture pieces I've been working on. So if you're in my neck of the woods....stop by and visit. It makes the day all that more fun...like having a party on location. Karin

Last day of class

The time has come to say goodbye to teaching my art workshops. It was a tough decision and hard for me to break it to my students.....most of them have been with me for the past 3 years. I'm not going to say I'll never teach again but for now I need to focus my energy elsewhere. This year has been an exciting one, full of new projects and opportunities. I plan on just riding it out, seeing where it takes me.
Below are some images from our last day. Waves painted on wood, a floral textile pattern and an adorable goldfish and puffer. I have been so lucky to have such a talented group of young artists to work with and I hope they keep painting, drawing and exploring new mediums. Karin

Before and After-Marble Buffet

Can you believe I scored on this beauty for only $15!
It had a broken caster wheel but aside from that it just needed some love. The marble top alone would have cost me a pretty penny. I did not complain, but ran to get my car before they changed the price.
A new paint job in slate grey, distressing, waxing, new casters, fresh hardware and voila......perfect addition to my dining room.

Hope you all have a happy and safe Halloween. I plan on celebrating it with a big pot of tortilla soup and passing out candy......just chill'in with my family.
Today we gathered to carve up all the pumpkins we grew this summer. Most were pretty dinky in size, but they sure look cute hanging out together. The picture was cropped to make them look larger than they are.

Sweet Max....aka Cheeseburger

Sadness has struck our house again as we mourn the loss of our handsome boy Max.
He passed away unexpectedly on Friday afternoon and took a chunk of our hearts with him. He had been suffering from random seizures this year that the vet said could eventually end with a stroke. I just didn't think it would be so soon.
There is nothing better than having 16 pounds of love greet you when you pull up in front of our house, race you to the door and want you to carry him in like a baby as he rubs his head into your shoulder.
He always looked both ways before crossing the street and waited every morning (8am sharp) at our neighbors doorstep for his morning salmon ball treat.
I know we will always have animals in our life, but I sure wish this grieving part wasn't included. We miss him so much.

The Pannikin Lounge

If you go by the Del Mar Pannikin this week you will notice the newly expanded space we like to call The Pannikin Lounge.
When Bookworks closed over the summer, we were all saddened by the loss of an amazing bookstore that had been in business for over 30 years. They shared an adjoining space with the Pannikin and carried an amazing collection of books mixed with a beautiful assortment of vintage finds. I spent a lot of time there drinking coffee and buying pottery for my ever evolving collection (stash).
Well, until the space is leased out again, the Pannikin is using it to expand their seating and also added a few tables of statuary and ceramics. They asked me if I'd like to create an island of vintage furniture to sell as well. Ah, yeah! Don't have to twist my arm.
I've been painting, gathering and revamping stuff all weekend. Here are a few pictures so far and more will be added next week.

Wedding prep...part 1

Literally every surface was covered in floral arrangements for my sister's wedding. My studio never smelled so good.
Luckily the white lilies started opening up the day of the wedding.
Lara and Nelz wanted a white wedding with roses, orchids and lilies in tall glass vases filled with pebbles and twigs. The short glass arrangements were lined with tea leaves.....and of course lots of votives on all the tables. Each cocktail table had glass cylinder vase with a green orchid and more pebbles. For the ceremony, a swag of greens and flowers with a curtain of orchids that we strung from clear thread. They added a beautiful touch especially with a little breeze.

Latest addition to our family tree

My sister Catharine gave birth to her first baby yesterday morning. She had a wonderful home birth/water birth with 2 midwives, an assistant and my sister Anica as her personal doula.
He is amazingly adorable, and if he could have waited just one more day, he would have been born on my birthday.

A) plotting to kidnap him...
B) Anticipating the flash to go off and didn't want him to deal with that so soon...
C) Thinking of eating him

New paintings and some wedding prep

Here's a glimpse of what I've been up to lately.
A cow I painted on wood......because who doesn't love cows right? I think I'll name her Violet. She'll be making her way into the Pannikin sometime next month.
A custom bird and birdcage painting for a lovely local girl. I love painting on large canvas's. Only thing is....they take up a lot of room in here once they're done.
Pay no attention to the messy background. I can't even make my way to that corner to clean it.
Why?.....because the prep work has begun for my sister's wedding. I got the painted rock table number idea from my friend Jen's wedding a couple years ago. It blends in perfectly with the rest of the decor don't you think? Can't wait to show you the flower arrangements next week. Karin

p.s. A big thank you the person who saw my post about the pannikin furniture and swooped it all up the very next day. I just filled it back up with a few more vintage goodness. (wink)

Here are some of my latest furniture pieces I have at the Pannikin right now. They will only be there for a short time as we get ready for fall and the holidays. Can you believe it's that time of year again?

I also thought I'd share pictures of the worlds largest margaritas. My sister and I enjoyed an afternoon of shopping for our sister Lara's bridal shower gift. It was her idea to have a margarita first......and what a great idea it was.

This picture cracks me up every time I look at it.
So,.... I had to pick up Eddie's prescription from Rite Aid after his doctor's appointment, and since they are right next door, I wasn't about to drive home and come back. It was too hot for him to stay in the car, and technically it's illegal to leave you pet in the car, windows down or not. At least in California it is. Did you know that?
So we marched into Rite-Aid where a lady stopped me and said "your dog isn't allowed to walk on the floor. Huh????
So I smiled and picked up my beast of a dog and stuck him in the cart. Here he is waiting patiently for his meds.

What's up?

I wish I could say that my less than frequent posts here are due to laziness.....sleeping in, going to the beach, having coffee with friends. Sounds like a dream. The truth is, the last few weeks have been CRAZY! Mostly good things, some bad, and all very time consuming.
I also told myself I'd never apologize for neglecting my blog... cause I really hate those posts. So rather than bore you with my ongoing list of things to do, I will try to be brief.

There are babies about to be born, a sister's wedding in a couple weeks, an art hanging at the Pannikin, reorganizing the pannikin's art submission process, custom paintings in the works and a list of new stuff waiting to be added to the shop. There's furniture to paint, meetings to schedule and vet bills. (Our Eddie has been diagnosed with a rare skin disease on his feet! Poor little guy)

*I'm also suffering from a case of I-Phone addiction. Any advise? I caught myself (a few times) texting while in the company of friends. I thought I'd never do that.....that's one of my biggest peeves... and I'm ashamed.

I will be back when I can formulate a clear thought. Until then, have a great rest of the week. Karin

Art Walk 2011-recap

It's funny..... every Art Walk I've participated in has been so different and unpredictable. You never know what's going to be the best seller of the day or what type of crowd will come.
What I can count on are my local friends and family hanging out throughout the day and my friend Kathi who lives right around the corner bringing me a margarita from her bike basket at closing time. That is the best!
I also loved having artist Steve Burrows artwork next to me. Isn't this a great VW bug painting? He has a great style and can't wait to book him for the Pannikin next year.
Oh yeah, I've been appointed the artist curator for the Pannikin and have been looking for local talent to book for next year.

These pictures are me messing around with my new Iphone. I kind of wish they were lighter, but since I'm just learning how to use this devise, I'll cut myself some slack.

Baby Shower...continued

The theme for my sister's shower was "vintage baby" which was so much fun to plan.

The day went without a hitch thanks to all the help from my sisters and friends who pitched in with fabulous food and props.
I can't believe I forgot to take a picture of the food table! It was beautiful.
For lunch we enjoyed a vegetarian feast of tea sandwiches, pasta, savory tarts, quinoa with cranberries and almonds, pesto quiche, green salad and a tropical fruit salad. Then of course we had to trash our bodies with candy and cupcakes...oh and some really good rum punch.

The decorations consisted of handmade tissue pom poms, pin wheels for the cupcakes, and a felted bird mobile ( which I figured it took me about 20 hours to make!). It was really special to have my Dad's old teddy bear included in the decor and my sister's vintage steif collection. The garland was made from vintage alphabet cards attached to twine with mini clothes pins.

The outside was decorated with paper lanterns, flowers, vintage table clothes and an assortment of baby hawaiian shirts strung on a clothesline .

....oh, and little succulent party favors.

Mix all of this with good people and I'd say it was a total success. So successful that it lasted well into the evening.

With so much going on this month, I haven't had much time to post here....but I have so many things to share.
Here's just a glimpse of a few things I finished recently.
--Remember the set of robot paintings for my sister's nursery? Well, they're finally finished and prints are now available in my shop.
--A cute little sock dog (which I call "shop dog") made for my friends sweet baby boy.
--lastly, some furniture rehab projects for the Pannikin's retail area. It's been a lot of fun reworking vintage pieces for them which have been flying out of there faster than I can paint. Stop by next week and check out my "back to school" display.

Coming up...a baby shower (just wait till I show you the decorations!), a charity event, some custom work, and slew of new paintings which I'll be bringing with me to this years Leucadia Artwalk on Sunday August 28th.

Musical Furniture --dining room

So I was playing musical furniture in my house again. This time the dining room go a little switch-a-roo.
I recently acquired a table my Dad used as a desk and wasn't sure what to do with it...but knew that I liked it. I love the simple lines and the top has really pretty wood slat detail.

So I was going back and forth in my head as to where it would go. A sewing table in my art studio or here in the dining room? It was a too big for the studio and I thought it might be too small for a dining table... but once I switched it, it totally worked. Just the right size for the space. I also swapped out the four chairs with these that were in my studio. I think this room needed some wood to ground it after the walls were painted.

It's funny, I've always had the idea that I needed a table that seats up to 10 people since I have such a big family. In reality, when my families over, we all sit outside at the larger dining table.

.....and my day was going sooo well.
I forgot to check the back of the wood canvas before painting the little green guy, and the hanger keyhole was at the wrong end! Guess I'll be pulling out my router and making a new notch....or maybe turn him into a bat. I just hate it when that happens.

And for some good news---

....My "Retro Kitty" painting was chosen for a pet painting exhibit at the Encinitas Library. It's up now if anyone wants to check out the show. I'm not sure if they're having a reception or anything but will post it if they do.

and.....I've been sewing like a crazy person for the last few days. Can't show you yet what I've been making. They are all baby presents for the slew of babies that will be born soon or have just been born. Literally, they're dropping from the sky faster than I can sew. It's been really nice to finally use some of my own fabric! Can't wait to share.

Calling all Artists!

I know it's kind of late notice but I just found out today myself.

The Pannikin is having a charity benefit on August 18th from 6-10pm. They plan on doing this annually and picking a different cause each year. This years donations are going to help a regular patron of the Pannikin and personal friend of mine who is in need of a medical treatment after being in a horrible accident.
I will definitely be involved with my time and donations. If any of you talented artists would like to donate a piece of art for the silent auction it would be so appreciated. Not only will you be helping a local but you will also be gaining exposure for your business.

What a Shower!

This was one of the prettiest showers I've been to in a long time. My friend Jessica who works at the Pannikin had her shower there after hours. We ended up closing the place down after 10 o'clock.
I left with so many great ideas to use for my sister's shower next month.
Pretty decorations, incredibly delicious thai food, and a fun group of ladies= a perfect shower.

Words cannot express how excited I am to have this new/vintage stove! It belonged to my friend Tina who inherited it when she bought her funky Leucadia beach house 13 years ago. She baked many wonderful dishes in this old Betty and now.... it'll be mine next week.

Since my oven has been broken for almost 5 years now, this couldn't have happened at a better time.

Tina, I promise to take good care of her and give her center stage in my own kitchen. Actually, the rest of my kitchen will be designed around her. And when the time comes to refurbish this vintage beauty, I think I will have her painted apple green.

Latest Planting Project

Just finished making this concrete/moss planter and couldn't wait to recreate a Bonsai forest I had my eye on at Barrels and Branches. It was way out of my price range so "why not make one right?" Definitely more work than I thought, but so worth it. Instead of a ficus tree, I chose a tiny fuchsia as my focal plant. The rest was filled in with pebbles and succulents. Is this not the cutest thing?

Somebody's...getting .........married

It's official! These two lovebirds are engaged and we couldn't be more excited. Nelz, we love you and although we already think of you as family, now it's going to be official. Lara........you did good girl!

Art and I were asked to help set up the surprise down at Seaside Beach similar to the last one we did for our friends a year ago. Honestly, I think this one was even prettier.

Once everything was set in place, we all (Cat, Zuri, Anica, Ethan, Art and I) hid around the corner of the bluff..cameras in hand like paparazzi.

The rest of the day was spent eating, swimming and chilling on the beach.

Corn Crazy Man

The vegetable garden is out of control this year. Art wanted to grow corn which is not easy to do. I tried to persuade him to plant something else and I'm glad he didn't listen. Corn needs really nutrient rich soil and all my past experiences with it have failed. I guess having chickens to fertilize our soil has changed everything.
Art calls me out to admires his corn babies daily. It's crazy how fast it grows.

We've got tomatillos, peppers, squash, tomatoes, pumpkins, beans, nectarines, strawberries, plums, leeks, herbs, and of course sweet peas and giant sunflowers.

It's official....we are frustrated farmers in suburbia.

I can't believe July is right around the corner and it's already chock full of activities and events. Are you all experiencing the same?
Haven't even had a real beach day this summer.

My cat......the stoner

I vaguely remember sprinkling a package of cat nip seeds in this old terracotta pot. Someone gave them to me and there they sat for several months on the counter. I remember picking it up and thinking "just go throw it in the yard and it'll be out of the way"
Then this plant started to grow and we all thought it was mint but smelled kind of like pot. It got bigger. We soon realized that it was the cat nip when Max would bury his face in it and fall into a deep trance. His eyes would become dilated and I'd find him sleeping in some pretty crazy uncomfortable positions. He's also been climbing in every bodies car lately. That I'm not too happy about.

I'm now trying to dry some of it and make my kitties cat nip toys for Christmas. Who could possibly be thinking of Christmas this soon? That would be me......number one pet parent....or parent of a stoner. What ever you want to call me.

Father's Day Weekend--art classes

Here are some examples of what my students were doing in art class this weekend. I decided to go super old school this month and have them focus on their drawing skills using still life objects. Last week it was dried poppy pods in charcoal.
Once they get to a certain comfort level on their piece, I like to sit with them an draw along.
Today's assignment was to draw their hand. Why is there a bird in the mix?.........Because I didn't feel like drawing my hand or using charcoal that day. Part of being the teacher means that no one can tell me what to draw. ha ha
Looks a little different from my normal style eh, but this is how I have to draw when teaching. My job is to teach them classical art techniques so they'll be more confident with their ability later when they're developing their own style. I don't want them drawing the same thing over an over, stuck in a rut. It would be so great to see them when they're 30 or 40 and how their art has evolved. Since I know a lot of these kids from birth, I'm sure I'll get the chance. I'll be the old lady with wrinkles, a white bun on her head, and paint all over my apron.

Anyway....... didn't they do a great job?
My second class also produced some amazing watercolors which unfortunately I forgot to get a shot of. I'll see if they'll bring them back next week so I can show you.

Custom orders

Some old, some older than old, and some I just started working on.
I don't know why I didn't share these earlier. They've been in my photo gallery forever and I thought I'd show you before I move them out.

The sweatshirt design was for the Pannikin's employees last Christmas. Man, that was forever ago. It's an image of a sexy senorita with espresso making gadgets in each hand as if she was holding pistols. They didn't want to use my title for it on account of it being spanishlish (spanish/english), but I kind of liked it. I called it "No messo with me espresso!"
Here in southern California, I think spanglish deserves to be real language....don't you think? It's the only language I'm really fluent in.

The chickadee painting was a custom that my client gifted to her good friend. I love how cute and small it is.

The last sketches to be painted are for Zuri (brother-in-law). I'll post some real pictures when I'm further along.....and no, the words aren't going to be on the paintings. Just thought I'd title them for my own kicks.
Zuri wants these for his baby's nursery.
That was really weird to write. (Zuri, I know you're reading this. Was that weird for you too?) I still can't believe my sisters having a baby! So excited!!!

Here they are...

All finished with chain and handcrafted clasps made from sterling wire and hammered for a lovely effect. Needless to say, I'm very pleased with the result.... and only kept 6 for myself. Pretty generous of me don't you think?

Seems like I only make jewelry about once or twice a year when inspiration hits, so I'm enjoying this ride as long as it lasts.

I spent most of today turning my jewels into necklace pendants. I'm starting to get the hang of it but realize it will take lots of practice to master the art of soldering.

Yes I posted three pictures of the same thing. If it took you six hours to make 21 charms, you would too.. so don't judge.

Haven't picked out which one(s) I get to keep yet. Since I made a few doubles... I'm thinking I'll start with one of each. Why not right?

Once I make the chains for these they will either go in my shop or an upcoming art show. If you see one you can't live without, feel free to inquire.

Weekly update

In case you were wondering where I've been.... and maybe even worried about my absence here, this post should put your mind at ease.

This week has been booked full of activities with family, friends and events. Definitely feels like June. Always a busy time with parties and graduations.

My art classes also started back up this month and I was really impressed with their work and enthusiasm. Here's Andrew with a portrait of his cat Romeo. Romeo's health has been pretty poor lately and he was worried he wouldn't finish it in time. You can kind of see the sadness behind his smile.....so sad.

The rest of the week was spent hosting a cocktail party, a little beach time, going to a birthday dinner and today was the banner auction at Seaside Market. It was my first time painting a street banner and I'm already thinking up some new ideas for next year. (that's my "Beekeeper" painting hanging on the second floor.) I want to say thank you to the guy who purchased her at the auction. Hope you find the perfect spot to hang her.

I hope you all enjoyed the beautiful weather and spent lots of time outdoors.

Holy Yard Sale Batman!

My neighbor and I decided to get up early this morning because a friend was having a group yard sale and we knew we'd find something good. What we didn't know is that the whole block was one giant sale. I scored on a handmade quilt (which I love), a cute blue table, vintage seltzer bottles and old wooden cabinet (actually, I got those last week), and a couple baskets plus some odds and ends. Check out the title on the back of my funky 1968 painting! There's no way I'd leave that behind. The lady said it was painted by an old friend of hers.... who evidently didn't have children of her own.

Why do I always find things when I'm trying to clear out? Isn't that always the way.

Greta....tell your sister I LOVE the quilt and the pillow covers she made! Even Art was shocked when I told him it was only $20 bucks. It has already followed me out to the hammock and around the house. I feel like Linus on Charlie Brown.

Corners of my house

I recently bought this triple galvanized stand from a really nice shop owner on Etsy. It needed a minor repair when it arrived but now it's as good as new.
My initial idea was to use it to hold glassware for parties but it really can't handle a lot of weight so instead it's part of my garden table. What do you think?

Oh, and I had to sneak a picture of Betty in. This is her new favorite spot in the yard. I don't mind her sleeping all day since she works the night shift around here. Hardest working cat ever. Sure wish her work ethic would rub off on the other two.

It took several coats of lemon yellow paint and a trip to the hardware store to create the drawer pull. I was told that the glass was actually an insulator piece.

This great muti-functional table will be part of the Pannikin's summer display next week. I can already see their cute dish towels hanging on the rods underneath.

The Pannikin has asked me to provide them with vintage pieces on a regular schedule now. So far everything I've brought in has sold within the first week so I'm very excited to rehab some more funky treasures.

You know, every time someone predicts that the end is coming............I end up with a really good buzz, lounging in my hammock with all my pets wondering about. Literally, there are dogs, cats and chickens cruising around the yard just loving life.

Art and I did do a major weeding in the front yard and mowing in the back for the first part of the day. Wanted to leave with a good conscience I guess.
Several neighbors came by to admire our efforts. I told them I wanted to end this world with a clean slate and stop torturing them with our weedy curb appeal.

Two friends came to celebrate our "going away party" ........ which never happened.

So to all you christian fundamentalists..........thank you so much. Can't wait to do it again.

While browsing through pictures I took of my backyard last year..... it is clear that I need to dedicate tomorrow to weeding, mowing, and if I'm lucky It'll look like this again. Right now it looks like all the weeds I pulled before Easter have returned and are twice the size.

Of course, you are all more than welcome to help. (wishful thinking I know)

WAIT!!! Art just informed me that the world is supposed to end tomorrow, so I may change my plans. I'm not going to spend my last day doing chores. Maybe we should have a going away party?

Here's a peak at my latest series of sea creatures painted on birch wood. This is the first batch that I made from scratch. Sawing, sanding, and routering a keyhole in the back for hanging proved to be a lot harder to do than I thought, but allowed me to make larger random sizes.
Prints and originals will be available online hopefully by the end of the week.

I also wanted to thank all of you who came by my booth at the art festival last weekend. I'm still in recovery mode but also feeling a little high about the whole experience. Everyone was so friendly and supportive. The art jury awarded me the prize for "best acrylic/oil Painter" for the show. What an unexpected surprise!
I was so busy all day that I pretty much collapsed into a ball when I got home.

Looking forward to doing it again next year. (sorry I didn't have a chance to snap any pictures)

Part of being the featured artist for the North Park Festival of the Arts meant that I had to do a local news interview. I was so nervous and you could totally see it in my interview. I looked like a dear in headlights or maybe I just stopped breathing. Thank god it was only a minute long. Look how dark it was. I have no idea what I'm doing with my arms while I wait outside. I couldn't stop fidgeting.

The girl in charge of promotions was smart getting me to agree before she sprung the details. I had to be downtown by 6am! That means... up at 4am and out the door by 5:15 to beat traffic.
So now it's 11 o'clock and I'm fully dressed and wearing make-up. That's a rare occasion and shouldn't be wasted here at home...so off I go for a coffee break with the girls.

The best part of the morning was driving back and seeing my image on all the festival posters in every shop and restaurant we passed. What a trip.

I'm taking a much needed break from the studio right now. Still painting like a crazy person...... getting the last two pieces done before this weekend. The North Park Art Festival is Sunday and the weather calls for scattered showers but it looks like it might not happen. Cross your fingers for sunshine.

New at Barrels and Branches

I just filled my space over at Barrels and Branches with more vintage furniture and some plantings in old concrete urns and vintage pottery.
This gate-leg table is such a solid piece and so great for small spaces. It was hard to let go of the turquoise and white stool but I already have one of my own. I love things that are cute and practicle at the same time.

The North Park Festival is in two weeks so I've been painting away and there is plenty more to do.
Here are a set of three GIANT sea life paintings on wood that I just finished. I'm thinking of hanging them from my tent which will offer both shade and a little ambiance. Then they will be off to the Sea Rocket Bistro for the month of July along with some smaller pieces. I'll give you more info on that when the time comes.
Right now I need to just focus on painting.........which is really hard when the weather is so hot and the beach is calling my name. I did get to spend yesterday soaking up the sun with my family so I'm good for now.... just wish the water would warm up.

Today my friend Jen and I spent the day arranging flowers for her grandmother's service which will be held tomorrow. She passed away last week which was sad but also a relief knowing that she was no longer suffering. She was lucky to live such a full life and will be missed by her friends and family.
To celebrate her, Jen wanted to pick flowers that she would love that also defined her. She was both elegant and classy with a clear outlook on life and strong sense of self. (seriously.....one tough cookie)

Here are a few containers that needed to be refreshed in my front walkway.
The beauty of succulents is that you can propagate them so easily.

The window screen was rescued from the old beach house that I harvested the vintage hutch from. I tied different tillandsia plants (air plants) with fishing line and was thinking of hanging them from the eves outside my art studio.

Easter Lowlights

My family likes to play hard which usually means there will be casualties.

FYI--Ugg boots.....not good for baseball, especially on asphalt. I learned the hard way.
All I can remember is that my feet stopped abruptly .......and I was flying. My family was either laughing their heads off or rushing to see if I was okay. Anica may have soiled herself. After some cleaning and bandaging, I was back in the game.
Then cute little Ethan who was having such a great time retrieving fly balls from the neighbors juniper bushes......ate it on the asphalt.
We are now on the same team called "winners"

Next gathering will be at Cat/Zuri's who live across the street from on a real baseball field.

In case you haven't heard, the Pannikin is having their Easter Craft Day tomorrow from 1-4pm. Rosie Daley, Carol Holder and I have all come up with different crafts for kids/adults to make.
I decided to make these Easter Bunny Chia-pets with their to-go cups and stir sticks for the ears to stand up on. Totally cheesy I know, but I was short on time....and hey, you get to take home some rad plants!
I've been propagating many succulents starters to share with everyone, plus I have a couple extra party favors to pass out. (for the cutest little people that come) Carol is in charge of making fabric baskets and Rosie is molding bird nests with plaster etc. Should be a fun event.......and it's free for everyone.
One of the beautiful things about the Pannikin is that they love to encourage and support budding artists in our community. We are so lucky!

Art class, yard overhaul ......and a Fiesta!

This weekend was buzzing with activities. Bright and early Saturday morning...my art students were working hard on their paintings. When the room gets nice and quiet, I know they are deep in concentration. It's pure heaven.

Then Art and I spent several hours pulling a seasons accumulation of weeds. This is the time of year when we try to get the yard cleaned up so we can enjoy planting vegetables and of course giant sunflowers. After three waste cans full my fingers were raw and the backs of my legs were done.

After cleaning up, it was time to meet up with the local creatives for a super fabulous cooking party hosted by Melissa and Bianca. Melissa's house is so amazing I didn't want to leave. Actually, I think I was one of the last to go.
Bianca had fresh tortilla chips, two kinds of salsa and margaritas ready when we arrived. She then showed us how to make her families favorite dishes. Mexican rice, beans, guacamole and homemade flour tortillas. Go here for the recipes and more pictures. Seriously, the best salsa verde ever!

More great pictures are posted on Grace's blog right here. And if that's not enough for you, Alexis will for sure have some beautiful shots as well. It's so nice to see everyones take on the evening.
This cute "toro" pinata was stuffed with some amazing notions and handmade gifts! I'm loving all my goodies and party favors! Geez, this party will be hard to top.

Oh, I almost forgot....

Brandi made the best tres leches cake for dessert! I'm sure she'll be posting her recipe soon. Definitely want to write that down.

Deadline For Stealing Was Yesterday

Although I'm not a big fan of watermarking my artwork, I've come to realize that it is necessary. It's just not enough to resize my images. (only makes them a perfect size for cheesy scrabble pendants and other jewelers to use)

What kills me the most is when these lower than life creatures pretend to be something they're not...posting quotes from Buddha or religious scripture in their profiles.

Maybe they think this is just a hobby for me?
Being a full time artist means I have to work hard to make a living and pay my bills just like everybody else.

So I'll leave you with this little reminder..... It's NOT okay to steal artwork..... and it's illegal.

Sending a big thank you to my peeps in Florida who brought this to my attention.

You know, the internet is so huge, but it's also a very small community and we artists look out for eachother.

Goodbye Orange-Hello Citron!

It was time for a new color in the dining room. I loved the orange for many years but wanted something bright and fresh to compliment all the other greens that were in the room. I searched and searched for the right color until I came across an article on Design Sponge. When I saw the images of amazing New York designer and stylist Raina Kettelson....I was sold. It's so nice to find a designer who loves vintage and color as much as I do. She was nice enough to dig the paint can from her stash in the basement so I could match it. Thank you so much Raina! It's exactly what I wanted.

Nutella Party

Today was a belated "World Nutella Day" celebration hosted by the lovely and talented Alexis from Fern and Feather. We all made our favorite nutella treats and spent the morning drinking coffee and telling stories.......really.......really good stories. I now have so much dirt on these girls! ha ha ha ha ha

Just look at the beautiful way Alexis set up the dessert bar. I love how she pays attention to the little details. She's pretty much perfect in my book.

T'was a fantastic way to start the day, but I don't think I can handle any sweets for the rest of the year.

What crazy people do for fun!

Yeah.....I know.......it's March and the water's 58 degrees, but our groupon kayak tour was about to expire so we had to do it.

Truth is.......it was fabulous! The sun was out and we were plenty warm in full suits. As for the group shot of us (Nelz behind the camera), I'm just as confused as you. Semi-humping, crazy dancing, and Zuri may have had an accident in his wetsuit.

The views were AMAZING! I have always wanted to see La Jolla cove from down there. Lots of sea lions, some fish, caves, beautiful kelp and good times. I definitely want to come back this summer but without the suit, jacket and helmet. Since we all look so dorky, it felt okay.

Totally Random

I thought I'd start the weekend with some random pictures I snapped this week. A vintage buffet I stuck in my space over at Barrels and Branches. Also, lots of vintage pottery. (sorry, no picture)
Do the candles look familiar? No...they're not mine. I sold my business to Calypso Candles and they are now available at Barrels and Branches as well. So if your candle stash is low, you know where to go. They're working on their website and I'll let you know as soon as it's up.

Lastly, I had to post a picture of the first orchid I ever got to re-bloom. I was one of those people who just threw them away once they were spent. No more! A friend told me to give it a little water every day or so and it really works. ( no special fertilizers needed)

Before and After-Vintage Hutch

Look at my new baby! A friend of mine bought this old house about a year ago and is planning to tear it down. I got there just in time to harvest this beautiful hutch. I know what you're thinking.......why demo this cute old house? But in reality....this house was done. Termites had completely eaten their way through the log cabin and every room was falling apart. I even had to treat part of the hutch for termites. This house was well used up and it was it's time. (note to builder--log cabins by the beach won't last long in our termite town)

Because this piece was built-in to the wall, our friend reconstructed the whole backside and put the drawers back together. It took 2 coats of primer, and 2-3 coats of paint and a good soapy bath to get the crud off the glass knobs. Look at the original paper in the drawers. Isn't it rad? Just wiped them down and they look as good as new.

Now my plan is to paint the walls a light airy citron color which seems to be so hard to find right now. Not too green, not too yellow. Anybody have any recommendations?

Can't wait to show you when it's done.

Another Project crossed off the list

I got this locker for only $20!!!! A perfect addition to the laundry room. This beast holds everything!

It took about 6 cans of spray paint in my make shift spray booth constructed on the driveway. I think I actually got a little high on fumes with this one.
The embarrassing part was when I went back to Home Depot for more paint (and a respirator) and forgot to look in the mirror first. I had paint around my nose, and deep in my nostrils while checking out in a line full of dudes! So attractive. I don't even remember driving home.

I've got another even bigger project underway. It's taking some serious blood sweat and lots of tears but I see the end in sight. It's so great it needs it's own post.

Cabinet Revamp

I gave this cabinet a fresh look with a coat of turquoise paint inside and out, replaced the old rusty hinges and papered the shelves. The metal birds came off of an old iron garden dish that broke years ago. Luckily I was able to turn them into knobs.

I have a lots of furniture projects I'm working on right now. They are all in different stages of refurbishing and I will post them as soon as they're done. Until then.....have a nice evening. Karin

Mushroom Forest

I know.........is it done yet?

I've been a little distracted with other projects and custom work to put any time into it. The last couple of art classes were cancelled but we did manage to get together this week. Carol and Francesca are coming along on their Alice in Wonderland paintings which I plan on snapping some pictures of next Monday. As for mine, I'm just about done with all the background mushrooms and can now focus on the big ones.

Something different-- a Tutorial

I had this idea mulling around in my head for awhile and yesterday my supplies finally arrived from Dick Blick art supplies. I haven't used frisket in so long and was excited to mess with it again. Literally it's been about 20+ years.

Quick background history for those of you may not know........

Right out of high school I went to work for an professional artist painting tile murals and GIGANTIC illustrations on canvas that would be painted in her studio and wallpapered on to our clients walls. She had a huge loft studio on Cedros when the street was more of an artists haven than a design district. After five years she hired an assistant for me but I was getting so burned out and tried of airbrushing with ceramic glazes. What I really am grateful for is that I learned so much about different techniques and also the whole business side of being an artist.

So now back to the tutorial.....

1) I cut some birch wood and sanded the edges
2) Applied clear frisket and drew some schefflera branches on it
3) With an x-acto blade, I cut out my image and peeled of the background
4) Covered the whole board with white paint to seal the edges so they wouldn't bleed
5) Painted several layers of different colors on top. (let each layer dry completely)
6) Peel off the rest of the image to show the original wood.

It turned out okay but did end up bleeding a little bit. I guess the wood was either too porous or maybe I should have sprayed a primer first..... but I was all out. I'm also thinking of rubbing wood stain on it too cause I'm not sure if I like the light wood coming through and wish it had more grain to it. If any of you give this a shot, let me know how it went. Playing Musical Furniture...... again

You may notice by now that it always seems to be the front room that gets the Ol-'switch-a-roo, but I think it finally looks pulled together.
It's so sad to have to cover the pretty couch with blankets, but as you can see, Max and Bob have taken this room for themselves. (notice the paw prints walking across my favorite little sofa with crewel work fabric!) I guess repeatedly telling them to stay off it isn't quite working.

My husbands equally excited but I think it's because they are providing me with a tent literally across from the beer garden.
Guess I'll be driving us home.

Art Students Show and Tell

Here's a sneak peek at what my little munchkins are working on right now. The first class is doing a repeat pattern painting and the second class is having fun with their own subjects. So where do I begin? I know I promised pictures of my space over at Barrels and Branches, but I also included a few things I foraged this week. It's been a very good week for vintage.

-Check out the cool industrial little table. I'm thinking of making a second shelf for the bottom part. This will be such a great display piece until it finds its forever home.
-The globe just sold today along with a few of the blue jars I just found.
-I'm so excited about the giant pickle jar! You can never find them with the lid. Wouldn't it look so pretty filled with honey? (BYW..we have a fresh batch of honey for my local gals that want some. Let me know, it'll go fast.)

The stainless steel table stands 40" tall and will be mounted somewhere in my art studio. That was the deal of the day. Can you believe I only paid $5 bucks for it? Crazy I tell you. The supplies alone would cost me $150.
I also found another metal locker but I'm saving it for my next before and after post. It's going to take some serious elbow grease.

Tomorrow.....I promise to snap some pictures of my art students at work. They are just reaching their comfort zone.... and if I'm sly enough they won't see me with my camera.

Because my main focus right now is finishing all the projects lingering around the house, I have some more before and afters to share with you.

Remember the metal locker I got a few weeks ago? Well, it took some major elbow grease and lots of spray paint..but it's done. I call it "holy sh*#t green" and no it's not for sale.
I haven't found a permanent location for it yet, but since I'll probably never come across one again.. it's a keeper.

Next....the enamel numbers. I put the 23 on the door to my art studio and the five is a magnet on the locker. That task was easy and took maybe 5 minutes tops.

Lastly....Look at these rad folding tables!
I forgot to get a shot of them before I started but if you try to envision them in a poop brown color then maybe you'll be able to appreciate the transformation. How great are these? They stack so perfectly on their own stand.
Sorry.....they are not for sale either (yet). If I don''t use them in the next few months then I will consider selling them. I hate having stuff around that I don't use.

Check it out! I found this great little vanity chair and it swivels!

The blue velvet fabric was beyond tired so I decided to brighten it all up with some of my spring chickadee fabric. Instead of ordering it in an upholstery wieght, I ironed interfacing to the back which made it super strong. The metal base was sprayed a pretty leaf green.
This chair has inspired a whole line of repurposed vintage goods in turquoise, orange, lime and green. Many are available at Barrels and Branches right now and some I'm having a hard time parting with.
Now I want to redesign my space over there and promise to share pictures as soon as I'm done.

Just Started

This doesn't look like much right now but hopefully it will resemble a mushroom forest. It's part of a collaboration project with Carol and Francesca. The theme being "Alice and Wonderland" ...or did you already guess that?

Carol is painting the Cheshire Cat and Francesca is doing a storybook like illustration of the tree. I promise to get pictures of theirs next week when they're looking the other way.

As for mine....here are the first three stages. I don't know about you but I always love it when artists take pictures of the whole process.
It's also been really fun painting large pieces of canvas tacked on the wall.

Treasure Hunting

I thought I'd share some little treasures I found last weekend at a local yard sale.
I'm in love with the vintage enamel numbers! My three favorite numbers.... what were the chances?
The old hot sauce bottle had nasty fermented sauce inside that took a while to clean out but I think it will make a perfect bud vase.
.....and how could I leave this mini birdcage behind.

I also found a couple great furniture pieces that I'm revamping and will show you the before and afters soon.

Does anyone have any recommendations for a good satin sealer/varnish? It's almost time to turn in my banner for the Arts Alive banner project and I'd really like to protect it from the elements. (rain, salt air, bird poop etc)
She most definitely would look pretty sad covered in grime at the auction.

The banner itself is a plastic sort of material so I need something that dries well and not sticky. I'd appreciate any advise. Karin

My Soldering Class Review

Okay.......so how do I put this........
Honestly, I'm kind of disappointed. If I was to give this class a grade it would be a C-.

Sure, there were some good things. The space was amazing and the table set up was lovely. The other students were very friendly and helpful.

And now for the bad.

First of all, I have taken A LOT of classes, taught many classes of my own over the years and the one thing that I've come to realize is that just because someone does something well, doesn't mean they can teach. Our instructor just sort of floated around the room. She was very quiet and seemed a little bored. My friend and I were left to just fend for ourselves, relying on our neighbors with experience to give us pointers. (oh yeah, people flew in from all over the country to take this class. Like craft cult groupies!)

No demonstration or troubleshooting tips on how to use and care for our soldering tool. ( which by the way is super easy to damage)

Trust me when I say I'm not one that needs a lot of hand holding and can pick things up pretty quickly, but I would like to know at least the names of the things I'm using.

The class was supposed to be from 9am to 5pm with a delicious lunch included. Cost for the class- $150.

My friend and I arrived right on time and proceeded to wait another hour while everyone mingled and ate danishes. I think I would have rather had that extra hour of sleep.
For lunch, they ordered pizza which I kid you not...it had 3 inches of cheese on top.

I learned more from the five minute U-tube video I watched the day before. I'm also glad I brought some of my own stones to solder into necklace pendants.
We were all supposed to make crowns which is fine but I'm not really into the whole tiara glitter thing. I wanted to make something I would use so I made a votive holder. It came out okay. The pendants turned out much nicer and I can't wait to do some more.

So there you have it. Now I know what people mean when they say they are self taught artists. They must have taken this class. I think they should have charged $45 and I'd bring my own lunch.

My venting is over and now I can move on to more uplifting topics.

Remember these chairs I scored back in September? Well, I finally got around to recovering them. I ended up using a blue, brown and white upholstery weight fabric I bought from Etsy.
I love that these chairs swivel! Don't you think they go well in my studio? Should I paint the green table white now or is that just adding a whole new unnecessary project?
I just hope my students don't get any paint on them. Maybe I should make extra covers?
They already think I'm neurotic when it comes to messes. I admit, I'm only comfortable with my own mess.

So it seems that I subconsciously had a news years resolution and didn't know it (other than wanting a new kitchen).
I am determined to finish all my little projects around the house. Painting walls, furniture, recovering chairs, sewing a duvet, etc...etc....

One by one, they are getting done. It feels so good.

So....tomorrow I'm taking the soldering class at Urban Barn. It's an all day class and I'm so excited. If my project doesn't look too lame I'll post it here.

Here's my street banner for the Arts Alive Project. I named her "The Beekeeper" and I even added a slight iridescent sheen to the honeybees.
I can't wait to see them all hung along the streets of downtown Cardiff and Old Hwy 101. Actually, I can't wait for the unveiling in Feb. and meeting all the artists. Still not sure on the actual date but I'll let you know when I know.

Arts Alive

The signature activity of the 101 Artists' Colony is the Arts Alive banner program. 2011 marks the 12th anniversary of the Arts Alive Banner program in Encinitas. The event has grown from 25-30 banners in the early years to 101 in the present! Each artist paints an original work of art on banners that are displayed on street lights along six miles of Coast Highway 101 throughout downtown Encinitas, Leucadia, Cardiff's Restaurant Row and the Seaside Market parking lot.

Joining the 101 Artists' Colony in presenting these original works of art to our community each year are Cardiff 101, and Leucadia 101 MainStreet Association, with tremendous administrative support from Downtown Encinitas MainStreet Association.

Having originated in Encinitas, the Arts Alive banner program has spread to numerous towns and cities throughout the country. Last year, a transplanted former banner artist used our program as a template to initiate a successful banner program for school-age children in the Las Vegas area.

I sold my candle business!!!!

After 17 years of making and selling candles, I am now ready to focus solely on my artwork. It was a great ride and I wish the new owners much success.

I really want to thank all my loyal customers out there for all your support and friendship over the years. (Do I sound like I'm at the Oscars?)
Anyway, don't worry....the new owners will be making all my signature scents and maybe a few new ones too. I'll let you know where you can get them as soon as they are up and running.

Corners of my house

Once the decorations were packed away I couldn't help but noticed the neglected corner and wall in my front room. Two walls are blue and the one on the window side was still green. I've been meaning to paint it the same sand color that flows into the entryway but never got around to it.
Yesterday, I did it! A fresh coat of paint, new curtains and yet another game of musical furniture.

The birch branches in the corner were salvaged from one of our trees that recently died. They were just too pretty to throw out.

One home project down................and many... many more to go.

My latest Project

I was so excited when Arts Alive asked me to paint one of their street banners for this years event. There are about 100 artists participating and I can't wait to see all the finished paintings. The big unveiling is in Feb., then they will hang downtown for 3 months before being auctioned off.
Thought you'd like to see the progression of my piece. I decided to do a different version of my beehive girl since I always regretted painting the original on a small 16x20 inch canvas. Can you believe how BIG this thing is? The last few days were spent painting from a little stool or up on a stepladder. I'm just about done and will post the rest of the pictures soon.

Was it the soup?

How did this child turn from this to this? It must have been the soup.
I love that Ethan showed up for dinner in his pj's.

So tonight I informed the family that my soup kitchen was open which meant we had nine for dinner... instantly. I served the potato leek soup recommended by Georgia from Modern Crush which was a big hit. Recipe here.
I made two versions.... vegetarian for my veggie side of the family and the original recipe with bacon. The vegetarian version won by a landslide. Go figure?
Also, you really don't need to add the flour since it has potatoes. I will definitely make this again. T'was perfect soup for a rainy day.

We ended the night with lots of games in my studio, plenty of wine, chocolate and then popcorn to seal the evening.

I then I tossed them out the door when I was done for the night. That's what I call a perfect evening.

I know...... I'm supposed to be hibernating, but I had to share.

Art Class Show and Tell

I had to wait till after Christmas to show you this adorable "Snowy Egret" painted by my nephew Andrew (age 7). He used it for his holiday card this year. Just look at the feet and shadows! I'm so proud of him. Love it!

--FYI.....all the art class projects from Carol, Francesca and I are on display at the Encinitas Pannikin all month if you want to take a peek.
